Our Blog

As we close in on this year, as well as this decade, it does tempt us to reflect on the last 365 days… and for those with a better memory, the past 10 years.

From World Cup triumphs to dam levels rising, there has been a lot of positivity that has prevailed in 2019. At Metis, weve had an action-packed year. We said goodbye to some Rockstars and welcomed others. Our Accelerator program launched with the goal to make positive change here in SA and CcB entered her own Accelerator program, through the Entrepreneurs Organization.

To wrap things up, we thought wed chat to CcB and hear about some of her highlights from 2019.

Quick Fire With CcB

What was your favourite release this year in the world of Google Ads?

CcB: Phew, must I pick only one? I think Smart Bidding had the biggest impact in campaigns this year, although that was more of a 2018 release. It just did way better as it received more data. My favorite release was Google Display Pay for Conversions feature. Our clients were only charged if an actual conversion was received. Google is playing catch up to Social Media so they’re trying to entice more users to try Google Display Ads.

Any big changes we can expect in 2020?

CcBYup there is! The rumour mills have been running for a while regarding Google Search moving away from keywords and toward customer intent (based on the User behaviour) just this week I read an article on how a mini rollout of this has started. We’re also expecting developments around local ads, as well as Google Shopping going the route of buying directly on the Google platform. I may need to up my R&D time in 2020!

Did you read any special books this year?

CcB: I read 2 that really made me sit up and listen. Extreme Ownership & Never Split The Difference. The first one is about learning to lead and taking ownership. The latter is around how to negotiate.

What was your best business decision in 2019?

CcB: Without a doubt, joining EO (Entrepreneurs Organisation). I am part of the EOA program which has been designed to teach & support you around scaling up your business. Metis enjoyed a 60% growth this year 🙂

What was your most played song on Spotify?

CcB: That’s tough, I use music to help me focus. I am going to guess Billy Eilish – Bad Guy 😊

I am sure a few of us will be taking time off to relax in December, any Netflix recommendations?

CcBOooh my favourites this year has been A-Typical & The Game Changers was quite an eye opener. Needless to say my veg intake is currently up. 😛

What do you feel was your most impactful learning from 2019?

CcBThere are 2 that stood out for me. The one was from Tim Ferris that really hit home:

“So, you have $86,400 in your account and someone stole $10 from you. Would you be upset and throw all of the $86,390 away in hopes of getting back at the person that took your $10? Or move on and live? Right, move on and live. See, we have 86,400 seconds in every day, so don’t let someone’s negative 10 seconds ruin the rest of the 86,390. Don’t sweat the small stuff, life is bigger than that.”

The other was around how to prioritise. This year has been crazy busy and at points I felt very overwhelmed. Lizanne from OCFO shared a story with me (too long to write out) but the main learning was “Is this going to push the boat forward towards the finish line”, I.e. is this going to help move me towards my goals. It has been instrumental in decision making for me. 😉

Feel free to share your favourite moments & key takeaways from 2019 with us.
